MEET KAREN
Hi there, and welcome to Karen's Homeschool Adventures! My name is Karen Miller. My goal with this site is to share what I've learned as a homeschooling parent, and provide the tools for other families to decide if it's something that will work for them.
If someone had told me 15, or even 10 years ago that I would be homeschooling my children, I would have thought they were crazy, and likely would have started spouting off about how homeschooled kids are weird because they never have contact with other kids. Boy, how things change!
Deciding to home educate was a big decision for us. Probably just as big as deciding to have kids in the first place. Our oldest daughter went to kindergarten and grade one in a public school, and overall, she had very good experiences. So why in the world would we even consider homeschooling?
Just to be clear, I don't have a hate-on for the school systems. Yes, I see areas that I believe could be improved. But I also see things that are done exceptionally well, and I believe for many (not all) kids, it's the best place for them to learn.
We chose to start homeschooling (also known as home learning or home education) mainly for this reason: if the stuff that they're learning in school is designed to prepare them for the 'real world', why not have them learn it in the real world? I believe my kids will learn more and be much more eager to learn if they are learning through real life. (There's a whole lot of learning going on isn't there?)
Thanks for coming by!
Karen
